There are people whose lives are infinitely interesting, but they’re so jaded everything seems to them the same. Bored of everything, escape is sought. In 8 1/2, Italian director Guido (Marcello Mastroianni) is one of these people: surrounded by eccentric actors, actresses, and producers, he’s under constant pressure to direct his next film masterpiece, but his heart isn’t in it, and he wants out.

I think it's a pretty fair assessment. We've had a surge of innovation in the last year, which has been followed by a shed load of copy cats and mashups (your service + his service = my service) with a few gems here and there. Hopefully in time something cool will rise out of the "me too" brigade. - Slippy Lane
The only problem I see with web 2.0 is that it seem there's not many orginal ideas. I mean twitter comes on the scene and next we see 50 look alikes that don't seem unique enough. I believe there still is a vast area of ideas yet to be discovered but there are also a lot of compaines that will end up in the dead pool. - Colide81
The good news is that a lot of these companies on the list aren't very Web 2.0 ish... we're starting to see a new class of tech being trotted out, and a lot of it is post-Web2.0. I like where it's going. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
I think it's good the industry slows down a little bit and looks back to see how to get more people into this world. The early adopters are too far ahead of mainstream people. maybe I am alone in this but after digging into a couple of startups I am way more apt to side with Mark. The are refreshing, sure their sites could all be flashier but their -ideas- are sound. For my money, good design is cheap, good ideas are priceless. - Steve Spalding

Half of these companies, I thought, were not so much Web 2.0 or cutting edge, but transitional, bringing technologies to the enterprise. That's why they're willing to spend money on an event like this. And, Robert, I thought your post drifted from critiquing their sites to critiquing their products and business models. That was my issue with it, there are tons of awful models we rave about because their sexy, it has made it so when we see a useful ( albiet homely ) enterprise app we can't understand the value. - Steve Spalding

@Zee (top): iPhone Apps, OS X shareware, looking forward to CS4, like the intersection of entertainment and tech (Amazon streaming video). Bored with social networking web2.0 stuff and web apps that are far inferior to desktop software. If any of these Demo companies are cool, please, someone else write about them so I can read about it later. - Jason Kaneshiro
I think maybe the state of the US economy and our current political turmoil might be having an effect on innovation in "Web 2.0". We're all kind of focused more on the essentials than the "fluff" of which most websites are, as much as like to think they are life-changing amazing things.
