TV Everywhere, Served Up By The Usual Suspects

March 11th, 2010

TechnologySolid article over at BusinessWeek about the cable companies reacting to threat of video delivered using the Internet. The article uses the term “TV Everywhere” which is essentially what I’ve oft-referred to as “digital video nirvana.”

Blu-Ray: A Bag Of Hurt

February 20th, 2010

TechnologyPerhaps, since the cheap-ass Blu-Ray player has a WiFi connection, it read my previous post documenting its lack of use, and decided to teach me a lesson. Today the Blu-Ray player refuses to turn on, getting stuck at a “Power On” display and going no further.

Haven’t Watched All That Many Blu-Ray Movies

February 17th, 2010

TechnologyLast year, an indulgent Christmas present to myself was a cheap-ass Blu-Ray player that cost a little more than my WTH price of $100. At that price, I am willing to take a chance on a new technology, feeling that if it doesn’t work out, I’m not out that much money.

Google Buzz: Reminds Me More Of Yahoo! Than Facebook

February 11th, 2010

TechnologyMy initial buzz from Google Buzz is already fading. While still on board with the concept, its execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Using Buzz forced me to take a look at other Google properties I hadn’t looked at in a while, and left me confused regarding how they worked with Buzz. Specifically, Google Profiles and Google Reader.

Slight Buzz From Google Buzz

February 9th, 2010

TechnologyI honestly wasn’t expecting much from the Google Buzz announcement this morning, having found Wave too complicated and not personally all that useful, not ready to do everything in a browser with Google Chrome OS, and am not giving up an iPhone for a Nexus One anytime soon. I love Google, but lately their efforts have left me a bit cold.

Futureworld: When Technology Comes Together

Despite A Competitive Future, I Really Hope Netflix Succeeds

January 23rd, 2010

TechnologyNetflix’s stock recently received an analyst downgrade, forecasting a rocky road ahead. The company is managing a transition from a successful DVD-by-mail business to the more challenging area of delivery via the Internet. That future will take expensive infrastructure investment, plus tricky negotiations with increasingly reluctant content holders (Warner recently requested a delay in DVD rentals, and Disney may pull movies from Netflix streaming). And by moving online, Netflix increasingly competes with big, Internet saavy companies with lots of cash garnered through other revenue streams (Google [rentals via YouTube], Apple, Amazon, cable companies) that are claiming a stake in online video.

Netflix Roku Box Channel Store: Functionality Welcome, But Usability Suffers

December 11th, 2009

TechnologyAbout a week ago Neflix rolled out an update to the Roku Digital Video Player, and as a big fan of the device I put it through its paces.

Nice. Looks Like Stand Alone Blu-Ray Players Are Nearing The WTH Price

December 7th, 2009

TechnologyIn the continuing quest for digital video nirvana, I’ve long been missing one particular power up: Blu-Ray. I’ve been doing without a HD disc format, first because of the stupid HD format war with HD DVD, because streaming options over the Internet are eventually sure to catch up (the HD options on Netflix Watch Instantly and the Apple TV are good enough in my opinion), and lastly, price. Paying $300-$400 for a Blu-Ray player had me dancing around a PS3 for a while, but I never pulled the trigger.

Google’s Future Vision Of The News Sounds Great

December 4th, 2009

TechnologyEric Schmidt’s vision of newspaper’s future had me nodding my head. Beyond the flashy hardware, the key concept that has me drooling is getting all your news in one place according to your preference. A personalized news aggregator.
