Well, we left Tokyo two days ago. Yesterday, we spent the night in a traditional Japanese ryokan (inn) in Hakone, which is kind of a mountain resort. After a long bus ride up a mountain, we rode a suspended cable car over some sulfur pits, and rode a boat across lake Ashi. The sulphur pits warm the area’s mountain spring water naturally, providing awesomely hot water for the baths (onsen) at the ryokan. The ryokan also involved a super elaborate dinner and breakfast.

So the other day as I lay sick in bed I pop in The Mole People, a charming fantasy/sci-fi movie (1956) about a group of strapping, handsome archeologists who discover an underground ancient lost city (Sumeria) somewhere in Asia. Naturally, the least beautiful and older men die, while the remaining two play out the movie amongst an entire city of albinos (one of whom falls in love with the lead guy, because she isn’t really full albino) and their “slaves”, the mole people.

So: not much time to post, but at present we’re leaving Tokyo for Hakone to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. This means, no Internet, although I’m assured there’s running water. I pray there are some Western-style toilets as I’ve avoided the trough variety up until this point.

First day in Japan, and it’s been pretty overwhelming. There’s so much to take in here, but even in one day we’ve managed to cram in a fair amount, thanks to some family friends that gave us the crash course in navigating the Tokyo subway system, plus quick tours of Ginza, the Tsukiji fish market, Ueno Park, the Asakusa Temple, and the Imperial Palace. I’ll just run down the highlights as there’s so much more to do.

Yokota is a musician of the sonic contortionist variety, meticulously sculpting sounds and bending them to his will.

If you’re a geek you’re probably longing for some kind of geek paradise where you can feel at home and not feel like an outcast. Some call it Silicon Valley but if it’s general weirdness you’re after - and a break from those uber smart dudes who breathe code out of their nostrils - you’re going to love Japan. Really.

By the time you read this post, we’ll be on a plane to Japan for a week and a half vacation. I still plan on updating this blog remotely, but it won’t be a priority.
Until April, in order to fill in the gaps between sporadic blogging, I’ve lined up several “guest bloggers” - a different writer every day. I’m sure this will make for some interesting reading. I hope the contrast between writers will be part of the fun. Even I’m not exactly sure what will happen.
