espite my support of mass transit (I haven’t driven to work in nearly three years) riding the San Francisco bus (MUNI) is not a stroll in the park and I dare say service has gotten worse in the past year. So I’ve whipped up this quick MUNI survival guide.

Despite the common assumption that riding a bus is a simple affair, I notice on a daily basis many clueless riders (usually tourists, executives, suburbanites) that seem pathetically confused by the concept of riding in a vehicle with complete strangers.

I recently watched a documentary on the making of 2001: A Space Odyssey, regarding the challenges of trying to predict the technological future back in the 1960s. For some reason it inspired some random thoughts about where the Hollywood movie going experience will be in the more distant future - and how technology will make things both better but more likely - worse.

Never mind investment bubbles - the bubble that damaged me most was the hair metal one of the late eighties. After New Wave and the sexually ambiguous melodies of Kajagoogoo and Haircut 100, hard rock struck back with a vengeance via all kinds of pseudo-manly bands, waving their guitars like giant - guitars.

As hair metal grew in popularity, clones of clones of clones emerged - all  rock decedents of Van Halen and Bon Jovi in a cheap attempt to make a quick buck, hence inflating a head-banging bubble that could only collapse due the weight of the metal contained within.

Whenever you’re down on technology and consider writing a grumpy anti-tech rant, the oldsters do us one better.

First, Sir Elton John thinks art would benefit if the Internet were shut down for say, five years. In his opinion, music was way better back in the seventies. There’s too much technology and people are spending less time collaborating and too much time blogging to create good music - like his - although the last time he had a hit I got into was Nikita. Gee, with the quality bar lowered why can’t Elton just record a great retro album and blow all the youngsters away? Or are the youngsters of today too busy with the Scissor Sisters?

I found this post on The Consumerist amusing, although it states something that should be fairly obvious to most of us out there - Americans are fat and getting fatter year after year. The comments are especially interesting for the suggested theories as to why.
