After the earlier brouhaha about companies taking hold of our data, I spent some time looking at how to get all my good stuff out of the various Google web applications upon which I have become dependent. Much to Google’s credit, I found each Google App has export options into open formats.

This is sorta tech-related as Google regularly brings speakers in to talk to their employees about trends and a little bit of prognostication. Paul Krugman is a New York Times columnist (and blogger that I read regularly) and he recently discussed the current housing bust and the implications for the future at Google (Found via Firegodlake).

This is subtle, but cool news. Google Reader has integrated with GTalk meaning the items you decide to mark as “shared” appear to your friends when they’re using Google Reader.

About a week ago I thought I would do myself a favor and add news feeds and some of my favorite news aggregators to Google Reader. So I signed up for Digg, Megite, Reddit, my Twitter friends, Techmeme, AppleInsider, CNN, Google News, New York Times, SFGate, USAToday, Yahoo! Finance, etc. This is in addition to the long list of blogs (about 100) that I also subscribe to.

It seems that Google finally made good on the rumblings that they were lowering PageRank on many blogs that were selling links - including some that were affiliated with TextLinkAds - and others that may have been too aggressive with ads, contests, or whatever other conspiracy theory one can cook up.

In addition to traffic, links coming in, and how many thousands of spam comments Akismet has blocked - another detail that some bloggers obsess over is Google PageRank - basically a number from 1 to 10 assigned to a web page based on number of links to it from other web pages - and the page ranks of those pages. This PageRank number is supposed to determine how far up the list of Google search results your site appears. Anyhow, back in September there was some mumbling that a Google PageRank update was due, well, that month came and went and from what I gather it never really happened.

Unsubstantiated rumor says that Microsoft is considering a large investment in Facebook that would put the value of the Web 2.0 social networking darling north of $10 billion. In the end a company is worth whatever someone will pay for it, but I’ll play the game of opining whether or not Facebook is “worth” that pile of clams:
