Maybe The Kindle Fire Goes Up Against A Cheaper iPod Touch

September 30th, 2011

Just a hypothetical question in advance of next Tuesday’s announcement — which will definitely be about the iPhone 5 / 4S, but may contain music-related announcement.

Let’s say you could choose between a Kindle Fire for $199, or an 8GB (or even 16GB) iPod Touch for $199? Or an 8GB iPod Touch at say, $149? Keep in mind the iPod Touch runs the same iOS apps as the iPhone, including Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iBooks. The biggest advantage with the Kindle Fire is a bigger screen, but the ability to run all the iOS apps might win out. It’s essentially an iPhone without the phone service — a less-powerful iPhone, as opposed to a more powerful eBook Reader.

Another way to approach this question: what do you spend more time doing, listening to music, playing games, or reading? Which device would you get more use out of?

So it’s entirely possible Apple could deftly put a damper on all this Kindle Fire vs. iPad talk (which I think is silly, anyhow) with a price drop for the iPod Touch line.

We’ll see Tuesday.
