iPad 2: So Are You Getting One?

March 4th, 2011

At this juncture, despite being generally impressed with the iPad 2’s thinner size, faster speed and that cool magnetic blanket — am not planning on upgrading from our original recipe iPad.

It seems the upgrades are more “nice to have” rather than “must have,” and a lot of that has to do with iPhones already in the house which already sport cameras.

We also got a MacBook Air late last year and a Verizon iPhone 4  (the first phone bill just arrived) so the Apple budget has more or less been exhausted for the year. Just a mental note that the phone bills alone for an entire year equal the price of a MacBook Pro.

The iPad 2’s increased speed and graphics power is tempting, and may be more evident with the newer apps like GarageBand and iMovie. I wonder how well GarageBand will run on last year’s iPad, and iMovie will have less functionality on an iPad without cameras.

And of course all bets are off after I fiddle with one in an Apple Store. I’m already curious about the Smart Cover to check one out in the store, and an impulse buy of an iPad 2 will then be possible.

But right now, I’m trying to be disciplined and not get the iPad 2.

Are you getting one? Why? Can you then convince me to get one?

I’m getting one! But mostly because I’ve been eyeing the original iPad, but knew another had to be close. I was hoping for Retina screen, but I read some very smart people write about how that’s just not possible yet — and I don’t want to wait another year or two.

At first, the iPad looked neat to have, but now…I actually have a use for it. My aging PowerBook needs to be replaced (it’s not my primary machine anymore, but it’s not a worthwhile portable anymore). A MacBook Air is twice the price, and cannot do fullscreen Plants vs. Zombies. :)

So for me, it’s more timing and functionality than anything — the new features are nice, but I already have an iPhone 4 with a camera. The smart cover looks neat, and I’m interested to see it in action, but I don’t think the new features are worth upgrading if you’ve already got an iPad (except maybe the new dual core processor, but still, most people can probably wait another generation).
