Apple TV Sells Out, Price Likely A Big Factor
MacNN reports that Apple TV is selling out at many Apple retail stores. They were sold out at the Burlingame Store this past Saturday, so I hot-footed over to the Hillsdale Mall where there were “limited quantities.”
Over the past few days, several acquaintances have said they’re getting one, with biggest reason being the price (the second, Netflix streaming). $99 seems to be within many people’s “WTH” price, where they’ll give the Apple TV a try, even if they aren’t entirely sold on the features, or wish it did more. Definitely wasn’t the case with the previous $200+ model.
So $99 is the new Internet TV set top box price point. And why Netflix / Roku was smart to drop prices below $99, while the Boxee Box now seems expensive at $199, and Google TV has got to get price-competitive before it gets any penetration at all.
