iOS 4.0.1 On My iPhone 3G: More Bars In Less Places, But They’re Bigger

July 19th, 2010

A few days of observing the bars on my iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0.1 leads to this conclusion:

More bars in less places, but they’re bigger.

I am now seeing three and four bars a lot more often. Places that used to be five bars now sport four and sometimes three. But 1, 2, and 3 bars doesn’t feel as bad as before, because those bars are slightly bigger. Right now in my apartment, which was usually a “no service” or 1 bar location, I am seeing 1 and occasionally 2.

None of this makes any difference in terms of performance. But the end result is that having 1 or 2 bars doesn’t feel so crappy. Funny what a difference a few pixels makes.

I believe this minor update number is 4.0.1, the major 4.1 update for iPhones, iPods and iPads will not be released until the Fall (October is likely).

Also, I was very happy to see that this upcoming new major 4.1 update will include the ability to control music audio playback via Bluetooth devices like headphones (a feature which has been frustratingly lacking for YEARS in Apple’s Mobile OS!).
