iPhone 3G Restored, Along With Faith In Apple
Guess my annoyance at the recent iOS 4 update was premature. Thought my iPhone was messed up, turns out not.
Thankfully, after hooking up your iPhone to iTunes, there’s a “Restore” button and gives you the option of several dated backups to restore from. There was a pretty recent backup, just a few days ago. I chose that one and my phone is back: apps, settings, passwords, the whole shebang.
And yes, iOS 4 is there, and the previous slowness seems absent: settings launches in 2 seconds, camera in 4.
Thanks to reader Mike who commented on a previous post and got me to take a second look at the restore option. Can I get my Apple fanboy card back?

Jason:
Glad to hear the problem was resolved, I am still going to keep my iPhone 3G as is and not upgrade OS. Wouldn’t make sense since multitasking is not a benefit. I did update my 3rd Gen iPod touch, and that went extremely smoothly as an update, no restore. The touch has the multitasking which is excellent, now that apps like Pandora, Slacker, ooTunes and others support it with recent updates. I can finally listen to streaming music while checking emails and doing other tasks.
The folder structure for organizing apps is great too. This will let me get a feel for the new OS for now. Guess I can hold off on new phone for a while yet, we are out of the 2 year contract period now so I want to explore options (hopefully another carrier will get the iPhone?).
Yeah Despite lack of multitasking, I updated the 3G to whet my appetite for the iPhone 4. Certainly not necessary so far.
Yay! I’m glad that worked for you — I figured it was probably too late. Very cool.
