Movie Notes: Cube Zero

= 2 stars
Starring Zachary Bennett, David Huband, Stephanie Moore
Directed by Ernie Barbarash
Synopsis
More people are trapped in a prison composed entirely of cubes, but this time we’re introduced to a pair of technicians that manage the cube and the traps within.
The Good
- Well, at least they did away with the ridiculous multidimensional hypercube thing and returned to the grimy cells and “boot dropping” of the first installment.
The Bad
- Unfortunately, as with Cube 2: Hypercube, too much is divulged about the world outside of the cube, much of which is too obvious or merely unsatisfying. The cube technicians live in a grimy world that is kind of like Brazil or The City Of Lost Children (obvious) and a superior officer named Jax shows up with two Matrix Mr. Smith types (silly). Just a dearth of imagination all around.
- The movie has a final surprise that is unfortunately dulled by some seriously ham-fisted direction, lingering much too long on a particular character and spoiling the revelation.
Conclusion
While better than Cube 2: Hypercube this flick still has too many problems to recommend. Skip it, stick with the original, and here’s hoping there are no more retarded Cube movies in the works.
