Eight prisoners awaken in a large cube with no memory of their previous lives. There is no easy escape as this time, the cube has multidimensional properties.
The Good
N/A.
The Bad
- Really didn’t like the multidimensional aspect. The formerly sliding cube has become just one room with exits through multiple dimensions. I found the physicality of sliding cubes much more threatening. Here we have time shifting and other nutty stuff that feels more an intellectual exercise dreamed up in a dorm room.
- As with its predecessor, almost unbearably wooden acting — with one exception, and unfortunately much suspense is removed when one realizes what’s in store for the best actor / actress.
- Despite better special effects, several of the traps resemble video game graphics. There’s also an annoying sound effect whenever a door closes that sounds like a face slap.
- One smart move in the first film was revealing so little about the outside world, so the cube itself could serve as metaphor for life itself. The little tidbits about the outside world revealed in this installment ruin that effect.
Conclusion
Bad sequel to a good movie. Skip this one entirely.
