iPhone: AOTATT (Anyone Other Than AT&T)

December 1st, 2009

Rumor has it that in 2010, the iPhone may be available on T-Mobile – instead of the oft-rumored Verizon.

Sounds great to me. I don’t care what carrier Apple chooses to go with, so long as it’s not AT&T. I merely want “anyone other than AT&T” (AOTATT).

My wife’s cell isn’t on AT&T. She currently has T-Mobile and formerly had Verizon. Both carriers have better coverage than my iPhone. For starters, she can make phone calls from our apartment. Meanwhile I get zero bars and have to go outside to make phone calls. So yeah, this recent customer survey ranking both Verizon (#1) and T-Mobile (#2) far above AT&T (last) doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

Supposedly AT&T recently beefed up their coverage in the Bay Area. Well, let’s just say I had to read an article to learn this, because I haven’t seen any improvement.

There’s frankly an air of desperation in the recent AT&T ads featuring Luke Wilson. It’s as if AT&T hopes we’ll just believe whatever they say if it’s coming from an actor. But Luke Wilson can spout figures, throw post cards, and point to check boxes all he wants, because every day, the first thing I see each morning is zero bars.

This video was embedded using the YouTuber plugin by Roy Tanck. Adobe Flash Player is required to view the video.

And I’m about to really test the limits of AT&T’s coverage during a trip to Northern Wisconsin, well out of the coverage area of the AT&T 3G map. Forgive me if I expect to see zero bars a lot more often than currently, which is already too often.

AOTATT. Apple, make it happen.
