Dead MacBook. Not A Big Deal
In light of this T-Moble / SideKick thing I was musing on writing a post about the necessity of backups. But fate has provided an anecdote that hits a little closer to home.
My MacBook (from 2006, I think) seems to have bit the dust. Pressing the power button gets no response; just doesn’t turn on. Tried resetting the PRAM and all that stuff; no dice. Guess I’ll have to stop by the Apple Store tomorrow and get it checked out.
After sympathy, the next question is surely “Did I have everything backed up?” Well, the answer is no. But in this case it doesn’t matter.
My strategy with the portable is not put anything on it that I can’t afford to lose. Portables are risky business. If they don’t die from hardware failure, they are at risk of being stolen, dropped, or merely forgotten somewhere. So my backup strategy was to not have anything on it that warranted a backup.
My second backup strategy is to maintain a desktop along with a portable, hence the heavily Time-Machined (is that a verb) Mac Mini I’m currently typing on.
In any case, I’m looking forward to getting a new MacBook / MacBook Pro. However, I realize there are some rumors of an October refresh for the MacBook, iMac, and Mac Mini lines. So I feel obligated to wait at least two weeks to see what Apple releases.
