Movie Notes: The House Bunny

September 15th, 2009

The House Bunny

2 stars = 2 stars

Starring Anna Faris, Colin Hanks, Emma Stone
Directed by Fred Wolf

Synopsis

Hot but dumb Playboy bunny Shelly is kicked out of the Plaboy mansion and ends up advising the lamest sorority of social misfits, Zeta Alpha Zeta.

The Good

  • That Anna Faris, definitely sexy and stupid.
  • A few funny lines, centering around the dumb blonde routine. A house mother says this isn’t a brothel, and Shelly replies not wanting to make soup. The Z and E fall off of the Zeta sorority house sign, and Shelly says “At least you still have T and A.” Shelly directs a photo shoot, calling the model a “bad witch,” and saying “a house is going to fall on you… a sexy house.” Yeah, I laughed.

The Bad

  • Shelly turns the sorority girls into bimbo clones of herself, and then backtracks when she realizes there’s more to life than being pretty and vacant. The second half is this inevitable “lesson” part, wholly predictable, and not nearly as funny as the dumb bunny.
  • The sorority has too many women in it – I have no idea why Catherine McPhee is in this film, or the manly lady from Idaho. None are as funny as Faris.

Conclusion

A barely passable rental. I think Faris has the talent to carry a good movie, but this ain’t it.
