iPhone App: Galcon

= 4 stars
Defend and conquer as many planets as possible before your opponent(s) destroy your civilization.
The Good
- Simple gameplay. This is a “risk” style game where territory must be conquered, and battles are won by which side has a higher number, the attacking force or the attacked territory. Conquered planets generate more ships to add to your fleet. But the game isn’t turn based, so you must move quickly. Soon you’re directing fleets in multiple directions while simultaneously — sometimes desperately — defending already-conquered planets.
- The iPhone’s multitouch is used to good effect, and I’d say it’s even easier to play on the iPhone vs. on the computer, where the fast-paced mouse maneuvers required literally cramped my hand up a few times. Here it’s all touch and swipe.
- Contains several variations on the basic game.
The Bad
- The graphics are a little lacking in comparison to other iPhone games; triangles represent spaceships, the battles don’t show spaceship fire, and inhabited planets are merely represented by color.
Conclusion
Really great implementation of an existing game for the iPhone. If you enjoyed the original, you’ll like this version.
