iPhone App: Isotope

= 5 stars
Isotope is a space shooter action game with some role playing elements.
The Good
- Pleasingly retro vector graphics (think the old Atari games or geoDefense), but add references to periodic table elements, and a crazy variety of weapons and enemies. You can imagine entire game is taking place in some microscopic, sub-atomic world or a supercollider containing sub atomic particles.
- Deliciously overwhelming variety of enemies, ships, weapons, and levels. Baddies are swarming clouds, green invaders that pass through walls, orange flames with tails, and bosses whose unique abilities surprise upon first encounter. You get to choose a ship and then spend money and experience accrued through the levels on ability upgrades, modules, and helper satellite ships. Some cool examples are heat-seeking bullets, black holes that suck in baddies, and pulsing protective fields.
- Two modes: scenario with tons of levels, and survival. The levels are well-designed, and because you can choose a different ship, have high replay value. Survival takes place in a rectangle with wave after wave of enemies, which proves to be a good place to accrue experience and money.
- Straightforward controls: D-pads on the left and right for movement and firing respectively. There are options to control via the accelerometer, fix the D-pads in one location or have them move wherever you first put your thumbs down.
The Bad
- Confusing interface: you must click through several screens to click through just to enter a level, and the store / equip screens had me scratching my head. Not helping things are the aforementioned periodic table references for weapons. Some graphics would be helpful here.
- Due to my obsession, I plowed through the entire game in a few days and now have $18 million with nothing to spend it on. Once you accrue enough weaponry, the game is on the easy side — I’m not that awesome.
Conclusion
Isotope is a solid, addicting game. For a time, I was determined to reach the last level, and play the entire game over with a different ship and weapons. That to me is worth three bucks and then some. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the post. Isotope is a very interesting game. My friends all like it. I cant leave the house, I cant sleep — I play, play and play. I cant compare it with anything else. This game is unigue. I always liked space shooter action games , and this is the best in this kind.
