iPhone App: iSperm

iSperm is a simple novelty action game where you play a determined sperm, swimming toward its goal.
The Good
- Subversive sense of humor alert: in “Sperm Race” you control a sperm swimming up a “pink tube” toward an egg. Surely you know what the tube is and how the sperm got there, but things are kept cute, tactfully avoiding all that adults-only stuff. The sperm wear cartoony costumes and the soundtrack is Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries (featured in Apocalypse Now).
- Simple gameplay: Shake your iPhone as fast as possible (to uh, get the sperms going really fast), tilt to avoid blobs in the “pink tube,” and then tap quickly to break into the egg. Points are based on how fast you accomplish all three tasks and if you beat a flock of co-sperm to the goal.
- An additional game called “Egg Defender” places you in the role of an egg at the center of the screen with scads of approaching. Tap in any direction to send out a wave that bounces the sperm away. The goal is to avoid conception — an amusing contrast to the other game. The soundtrack is Strauss’ The Blue Danube (featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey).
- You can play these games with one hand.

The Bad
- Although both iSperm games are solidly entertaining, more variety would be nice. The developer is on the right track by adding additional mini-games — the mind reels at other possibilities expanding on the basic theme. Regular updates like Pocket God, each adding another adventure, could eventually make this a must-have game.
- My wife didn’t care for it.
Conclusion
Very unique, chuckle-inducing concept, worth the 99 cents and then some.
