iPhone App: Fieldrunners

= 3 stars
Fieldrunners is a Tower Defense style game where you build a maze of artillery towers to prevent marching lines of soldiers from reaching the other side of the screen.
The Good
- The “creeps” in this game are various military units: foot soldiers, tanks, and helicopters that navigate or fly over the maze you build with various towers of differing capability. Your towers can be basic cannons, slow-downs (shooting a green goo), missile launchers, and electric towers. All can be sold or upgraded.
- You can zoom in and out of the screen by pinching.
- Graphics are cartoony but well done. The playing field view is at a slight angle as opposed to being top down, so the ovoid towers have a visually pleasing rotation.
- Difficulty levels of easy, medium, and hard, and game modes of classic, extended, and endless.
The Bad
- The detailed graphics feel small, and prove difficult to manage when the game gets busy (which is inevitable).
- Tower upgrades occur instantaneously.
- Odd: some baddies are heavily armed, yet they don’t fire at your towers.
Conclusion
Fieldrunners is a decent implementation of the tower defense concept, especially if you like cartoons or a cutesy paramilitary theme. That said, I prefer geoDefense.
