What On Earth Could Make Me Return To Facebook? I Now Know

May 8th, 2009

Today, both Twitter and Friendfeed went down. FriendFeed has now been down for more than an hour. These are the only two social sites I use these days.

I’ve been using Twitter more and FriendFeed less since the FriendFeed redesign which left me pretty cold, and this doesn’t help things. I thought FriendFeed’s new design looked peculiarly Twitter-like but really thought the similarity would end there. So in order to be more like Twitter, are they going to start copying Twitter’s uptime problems, now? I think they should have stopped at signing up semi-celebrities.

People’s tolerance for sites going down is very low these days. “Fail whale” is part of the collective consciousness; enough so that I spent some time jokingly imagining potential things to represent similar failure for FriendFeed (fail bacon?). Then that got boring, and I’m moving through annoyance to resigned hopelessness.

After the joking around subsides, the truth becomes clear. If I can’t rely on Twitter or Friendfeed, the game is over as far as this early adopter social media stuff is concerned. I’ll just surrender and return to Facebook, a service I dislike but everyone I know has an account and I’m the stubborn holdout.

C’mon FriendFeed, Twitter. Don’t make me do stuff I don’t want to do, namely curl up and die in the hands of Zuckerberg. But I fear you leave me with no choice.

  • Hold strong my friend. Don't succumb to the siren lure of that false social media we call Facebook. The quiet of the real-time web will be short lived and Friendfeed will be back pumping the distilled swill as quick as a page can be refreshed. :)
  • ...distilled swill - love it. I feel like someone cut off my supply. Maybe
I'd be better off going cold turkey.
