General Webomatica Update

April 26th, 2009

To what few regular readers I have, here’s a general update of blog changes, plus a preview of future content.

Core Reviews, Plus More Opinionated Tech

I shifted the top menu and side bar, keeping with the general trend of what I’ve been writing about for the past year: movie reviews, iPhone app reviews, and technology falling behind. But my overall goal is to have reviews as the core of the site with tech opinion pieces appearing sporadically, but more often. This strategy is looking more likely, as I have pre-published enough movie reviews to last until next year (shh, don’t tell anyone) and am doing the same with iPhone app reviews. That should free up more time for me to opine more about the state of digital video nirvana, respond to fellow blogger’s posts, and complain about celebrities taking over Twitter.

TV Show Pages

Created dedicated pages for each television show I write about, with links to episode reviews and pretty episode thumbnails. The TV Show page has links to said pages. I had fun creating the banners.

In the future, look for posts on Arrested Development, the next season of Mad Men, and Caprica.

iPhone App Pricing

Added standard iPhone price categories to the side bar so you can read only about free apps, or all the $0.99 apps. I have price sensitivity since dropping five bucks for a thirty year old video game.

Movie Reviews

Look for reviews of the Alien quadrilogy, all six Star Wars movies, and Woody Allen’s entire filmography — so much Allen I married my step — never mind. I started on Star Trek but got sidetracked playing Doodle Jump.

Contests

The monthly movie identification contest shall continue. I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find someone answering correctly right off the bat and so soon after I hit publish, reaffirming there are some readers after all. The prize will increase by $10 each month until an awesome $120 grand prize come December. It’s paid for by the advertising (Google, iTunes, Amazon) on this blog. I find some justice in redistributing money garnished from folks clicking on ads for Bride Wars.

That’s it for now, thanks for reading.

Jase, I look forward to your Arrested Development reviews. I’m almost done with the series and it’s still forcing audible laughter from me on the really good episodes (which are frequent). I think you will enjoy it.

On the iPhone front, this is the app that I *highly* recommend:
    http://www.routesy.com/

It is an essential app for Muni commuters. I know a lot of stops now have arrival times, but with Routesy I can better plan when to get to the Muni stop and determine if I should take one line or another (b/c no vehicle is coming or b/c vehicles are bunching, etc.). I use Routesy daily and the info it provides has made regular Muni riding much more bearable (it’s not a cure-all though!)

Cool… I’ve had the whole series ready to watch for a while, and now that
BSG is over have the bandwidth to check it out at last.
I just downloaded Routesy at your recommendation and shall check it out -
obviously have ample opportunity to test out with the #10 I catch every work
    day.

I also use this Nextbus/Google map page a lot in conjunction with Fluid (on the desktop):

    Fluid

Fluid is a great little app that makes “standalone applications” out of websites for you. I find it very useful. Maybe you are already doing something like this, but if now…check it out. And Fluid is free too (woot)
