Boxee: Nuked By Hulu And Apple TV
Apple released an Apple TV software update a few days ago. As with previous updates, it wiped Boxee from my Apple TV.
Reinstalling Boxee is just a matter of repatching the Apple TV with a USB patchstick. That’s the good news.
The bad news is I am, at present, not highly motivated to do so. My primary use of Boxee on the Apple TV was watching programming provided by Hulu. Because of a recent move by Hulu, Hulu content is no longer available via Boxee. And because of this, the appeal of Boxee was severely reduced.
And the Apple TV software update feels a bit like yet another barrier to using Boxee. Going through the process of creating another patchstick now just sounds like more trouble than it’s worth.
I personally feel odd about this, because a while back I voiced my desire for Apple to “do something” regarding the increasing utility of Boxee and Hulu on the Apple TV. I meant Apple should change their content offerings, putting Hulu on the Apple TV proper, or providing television show rentals, etc.
Well, both Hulu and Apple did “something” which was basically make Boxee a lot less useful. And the end result — I’m back to purchasing television shows via the iTunes Store.
So the lessons learned: Content is king. And a reminder that corporations are often competitors, and not above tossing a few sucker punches in there while the users (the referee?) isn’t looking.
After the dust has cleared, Boxee has to improve their product. If they can’t bring Hulu back, they need to get some other form of content that will motivate me to reinstall it on the Apple TV. The ball is back in their court — unfairly lobbed back by Apple and Hulu — but it’s in their court nonetheless.
How to re-install a working Hulu in Boxee.

Thanks, very interesting — but based on the comments on that post, it
looks like a lot of people are having problems with this fix. Ah well,
I might try to do this over the weekend — continued emphasis on
“might”
Thanks Ross for the info.
I’ve been putting a lot of serious thought lately into just getting a Mac Mini for my main entertainment unit and avoiding all the drama. The Mac already works with just about any downloaded video format, plus streaming from Hulu, Netflix, Youtube and other video sites (like CBS and MTV’s video site). At first it seems like an expensive (it would cost about 2.5X what I paid for my current TV) option, but it could replace a DVR, Apple TV, Ruko box, and DVD player (off the top of my head, and those are the bulk of the cost of a Mini right there). Plus it would work with any future service that supports Macs in general. It would even make a pretty decent media server to the other Macs on my network.
Using a Mac Mini connected to a TV is a great idea. I’m currently
using one as a desktop machine, which I’d love to move to the TV. So
right now I am waiting for some announcement from Apple regarding that
product — the Mini has been overdue for a refresh for quite some time.
It’s got to be updated before the middle of the year — or at most
pessimistic, killed outright. But as I wait for an updated Mac Mini,
there’s an equally good chance Apple will update the Apple TV —
improve it in some way.
So yes, it is an answer, but it also means personally I’ll wait a bit
to see what their plans are for a new Mac Mini.
