Apple Updates Their Cheapest MacBook

January 21st, 2009

Apple quietly updated their sub-$1000, white plastic shell MacBook to specs comparable to the new aluminum unibody MacBooks. The cheapest portable now has 2GB RAM, and the NVIDIA GeForce graphics card. It has a 120GB HD and a Firewire port, which the aluminum unibody MacBooks do not.

So this $1000 MacBook is a full $300 cheaper than the cheapest aluminum MacBook. For that $300, you get a stronger case, 40GB more storage, and no Firewire.

This is a very tempting, economical purchase. Personally, I’d save the $300. My current plastic MacBook is still doing just fine after several years, so I have no worries about the plastic being fragile. I also have several Firewire peripherals I’d rather not replace.

I always like to see improvements to the low-end of Apple’s consumer line, as those are the models I personally purchase without fail. I hope this MacBook update means updates to the iMacs and the Mac Mini are imminent as well.

The only negative aspect about Apple is their steep prices. It’s worth it, but still, the prices are ridiculously high.
