Edge is a simple maze type game in three dimensions, where you guide a cube around a series of cube-y platforms from point A to B without falling to certain doom.
The Good
- Definitely falls into that easy to learn, difficult to master category. You move the cube by swiping your finger diagonally to tip the cube in any of four direction. The cube can climb up one level in terms of height. You can tip the cube off of a platform, where ideally there’s something to land on. This simple set up soon becomes quite complex with the addition of trigger spots, timed movements of maze parts, and things that push your cube into unwanted places. I’m sure there are other surprises I haven’t encountered yet.
- The game design is very retro and in my opinion, very cool. The cube and its levels are in an isometric view which recalls classic arcade games like Q*Bert and Crystal Castles. Actually, the fact that the cube can fall off the map is very Q*Bert-esque. The game fonts are right out of the Atari school. The simple graphics allow Edge to run surprisingly fast and feels responsive.
- The sounds feature appropriately light, ambient music and minimalist sound effects, which match perfectly with the retro-techno design.
- Use two fingers (hold one in place and move the second one) to rotate the screen into landscape mode.
- A fairly hilarious situation where your cube shrinks to a smaller size, allowing you to crawl up walls and sneak into smaller spaces. The cube sound effect changes to match.
- You can also turn on the tilt sensor which allows for different and finer control of your cube. This is particularly helpful on some levels where you have to “grab” onto the edge of a moving platform, and perform a cube balancing act of sorts.
The Bad
- No cutesy wootsy cartoon characters like Q*Bert. Okay, I’m just making up bad stuff.
Conclusion
Edge is a fun, fast, inventive, cool-looking, and simple iPhone game. Even at the price of $5.99, it’s well worth adding to your iPhone game collection.
