iPhone App: Dr. Awesome

= 2 stars
There’s a viral epidemic and you, Dr. Awesome, must save the lives of infected patients by performing micro-operations. Tilt the iPhone to move a virtual scalpel while avoiding germs.
The Good
- Gameplay is simple, and makes good use of the iPhone’s tilt control.
- Patient names are pulled from your contacts. There’s a sick thrill in operating on friends and family.
The Bad
- Essentially an update of the arcade classic Qix, a game I was never that fond of.
- The cartoon characters and dialog between levels featuring a doctor and his female assistants gets a bit much. A simple game like this doesn’t really need a whole story line and cut scenes, however colorful. Thankfully, you can skip them via the “x” button in the upper right corner.
- After a few levels, I felt the game balance slowly tilting toward tedium.
Conclusion
I don’t feel Dr. Awesome lives up to its name, but with the price of 99 cents, it’s hard to say it blows. I’ll split the difference with a word somewhere in between: meh.
