MacWorld Rumor Round Up: iPhone Nano, DRM-Free iTunes, Mac Mini

December 15th, 2008

Apple Rumors

It’s that time of the year… no, not Christmas, I mean MacWorld, which starts January 5th, 2009. As expected, the Apple rumor mill is just now switching into overdrive. I’ve read a few rumors in the past few days which I’ll respond to.

iPhone Nano: This past week Engadget floated some pictures based on a silicone skin reportedly in production. Let me just say this: No. This is a dumb idea, a lazy one that falls into the general trend of “Apple makes a Nano everything” which is just not true. Just take a small step back and think: what would be the point of a smaller iPhone form factor? It’s already small and compact enough. The subsidized price of $199 is pretty darned cheap already. Once again: No.

DRM-Free iTunes: This one got floated as a possibility last Tuesday and it failed to materialize. It’s totally plausible and is an eventuality, but I don’t think it’s coming at MacWorld. The big reason: the music labels have to agree to it. If negotiations are going on right now, I don’t think there’s any chance an agreement will be in place for MacWorld, what with that thing called Christmas and New Year’s in between. Just like The Beatles on iTunes, which Sir Paul recently said had stalled, it’ll be a long and winding road until this one comes to pass – even though, all things must pass…

Refreshed Mac Mini: Wired floats a rumor from a source at Apple that we’ll see an upgraded Mac Mini. This rumor I can get behind. The Mac Mini has been woefully neglected for quite some time (I know, as I own one) and is overdue for an upgrade. It sorely needs a better processor and video card. Then there was a rumored email to a customer from Apple saying “be patient.” Plus, this update is such a no-brainer, Dell could do it. I put this one at a very high likelihood of coming true at MacWorld.

So that’s one extremely plausible rumor and two unlikely ones. I’m sure there will be many more in the days to come.

Oh, and if you’re still dreaming of an iPhone Nano watch this video.

the phone busines has done well for apple – they'd be foolish not to scoop a few more millions from all those people who haven't bought an iphone 3g yet.

  2. Looks like the did decide to come out with DRM Free….but not a iphone nano……whew! I just wish they would hurry and introduce a 32 gb iphone!

Apple is starting to really take a stance in the market especially with all these incredible products – merely because the quality is better!
