Movie Notes: Love And Other Disasters

= 1 star
Starring Brittany Murphy, Matthew Rhys, Santiago Cabrera
Directed by Alek Keshishian
Synopsis
American-in-London Emily “Jacks” Jackson (Brittany Murphy) works for Vogue magazine and has a cadre of close friends, including gay roommate Peter. Handsome photographer Paolo takes a liking to Emily, whom she mistakenly believes is interested in Peter. Hilarity ensues.
The Good
- Has a solid “indie” feel, it’s not at all glossy and in some spots quite raw.
- Brittany Murphy does an okay job. I was thoroughly unimpressed with her in Little Black Book. Here, she’s at least credible, but still comes off as a lesser Anne Hathaway.
The Bad
- Murphy is meant to be Audrey Hepburn (or at least, dress like her) a point hammered home when several characters watch Breakfast At Tiffany’s. They later watch Notting Hill. It just points out the film’s failings in comparison to these far superior films. Brittany is no Audrey; no way!
- The gay plot device doesn’t entirely work, as having “Jacks” be so clueless about Paolo’s orientation just makes her look stupid. I mean, having a gay roommate and working in the fashion industry should bless her with a vastly improved “gaydar.”
- Cliches abound – the boorish best friend, car chases at film’s end, and really silly cameo with Gwenyth Paltrow and Orlando Bloom. Peter has written a screenplay. I’m sure you can already imagine how the cameo comes about.
Conclusion
With a title like this, it’s too easy. This film is one of those “other disasters.” Stay far, far away.

I agree. Rented a DV and watched it with my old roommate.
