New Apple Ads Squarely Directed At Microsoft’s Ineptitude

October 20th, 2008

So, Apple fired back at Microsoft’s wussy Vista ads — the ones with Jerry Seinfeld and the whole “I’m A PC” thing — with some new PC and Mac ads that basically cut to the chase and point out in no uncertain terms why Microsoft is a dying company.

This first one pokes fun at Microsoft’s attempts to cover over Vista’s failings with expensive ad campaigns. Instead of fixing Vista, they try to solve the problem by distraction with ads. Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly what Microsoft is doing with their new ad campaign — the truth hurts. And the funny thing is, if they try to respond to this Apple ad with a new ad of their own, it basically proves Apple’s point.

This second ad pokes fun at Microsoft’s other distraction strategy — don’t talk about Vista and hopefully people will forget its problems. Let’s just talk about Windows 7 or how we’re all PCs, or Jerry Seinfeld’s droopy churros in Orange Julius — oh wait, that ad campaign was aborted. The rough part is, it’s really hard to advertise a product that you’re afraid to talk about.

Anyhow, needless to say I much prefer the Mac ads. They’re clear, to the point, and state exactly why Microsoft is in the situation it’s in — they spend more time trying to get people to buy their stuff and not enough time actually making it worth buying.

Nice use of embedding the Mac ads. So far, I hadn’t seen them, and now I have!

    Vista Vista Vista.

(And the irony of teasing re: advertising in a commercial just caused my neurons to fuse.)

These are great! Always great to see more of these from Apple.

I love that Apple is firing back so blatantly in these ads. They are emphasizing that Microsoft not only failed with Vista, but now has failed to dupe the public with its new Vista ads. Rather than improving the product, they tried to pull a fast one, and Apple is calling them out on it. Brilliant.

Microsoft is going to be left with no choice but to actually improve Windows, something it has almost no expertise in doing. It’s going to be an interesting next few years.

Also find it amusing that these ads have the same theme as what
Apple’s been doing for quite some time (PC, Mac). No need to
drastically change their ad strategy as Microsoft has done.

Perhaps we can infer that Apple isn’t paying John Hodgman or Justin
    Long very much? :)

Ooh, good point — I didn’t think of things that way.
