Episode 5

Firefly: Our Mrs Reynolds

Synopsis

At a village celebration, Mal dances with a local woman named Saffron. After the Serenity takes off, Mal finds she has snuck aboard the ship – and claims to be his wife.

Zoe introduces Saffron to the whole crew as Mal’s wife, much to his embarrassment. Shepherd deduces that the previous night’s dance was a marriage ceremony. Mal immediately asks about divorce. Kaylee and Inara in particular frown at Mal’s gruff behavior as Saffron runs away.

Mal tells Saffron he’d make a terrible husband, and offers to find her a job. She offers to cook him a meal and goes to the kitchen. Shepherd tells Mal that taking sexual advantage of her would be immoral.

Saffron’s cooking turns out to be an amazing cook. Wash wants to try the food, but Saffron hasn’t prepared enough. She tells Wash that Zoe should cook for him. Zoe is annoyed by her subservience.

Mal barges in on Inara, hiding from his new bride. Inara seems jealous. He walks out of Inara’s quarters to see Jayne holding a gigantic weapon. Mal wonders if this is Jayne’s long-planned mutiny, but he just wants to trade his favorite gun for Saffron. Mal refuses. Meanwhile, observers aboard an odd looking spaceship monitor Serenity.

Mal finds Saffron naked in his bed. He tries to talk her out of it, but she claims to find him extremely attractive. He kisses her – and passes out.

Saffron sneaks into the cockpit and disables Wash. She puts Serenity on auto-pilot and then walks to the shuttle to escape, where she runs into Inara. She tries to seduce Inara when an alarm goes off, causing a distraction. Saffron escapes via a shuttle.

Inara finds Mal passed out in his quarters. Scared, she kisses him – and also passes out.

Mal wakes up to find the crew looking at him – it turns out Saffron was wearing a sedative lipstick. Inara doesn’t admit to kissing Mal.

The crew breaks into the cockpit. Wash and Kaylee are impressed with Saffron’s sabotage skills. Inara says Saffron had companion training and tried to seduce her. Mal is taken aback by the thought of Saffron seducing her. Frustrated by the sexy talk, Wash orders everyone out of the cockpit.

Wash and Shepherd say the Serenity is headed toward a scavenger ship that destroys ships for parts. Mal and Jayne put on spacesuits and fire handguns at the other ship. The Serenity flies through the scavenger ship’s net unscathed, giving Wash enough time to regain control of Serenity and flee.

Mal busts into Saffron’s house, interrogates her about her reasons for such criminal behavior, and knocks her unconscious in revenge.

Back aboard Serenity, Mal asks Inara why she passed out. About to admit she kissed him, Mal decides she must have been seduced by Saffron and also kissed her. Inara doesn’t reply as Mal walks away.

Thoughts

Despite being a filler, humorous episode, it’s thankfully saved by Saffron’s double identity and the cute confusion over who-kissed-whom. The unspoken attraction between Inara and Mal continues to be just that – unspoken, a situation ripe for tension and comedic exploit.

Shepherd’s knowledge of the “net” scavenger ship suggests he’s much more than a simple, religious man.

  • The scene where Shepherd Book is telling Mal that it would be wrong to take advantage of Saffron is hilarious.

"If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."
  • yeah definitely a funny scene. i guess they still have theaters and deviants
    in the firefly future...
  • If a woman like that stood in front of me naked, darn straight "I'm gonna go to the special hell." I jumped on the Firefly bandwagon after it parked and am disappointed with myself for that because aside from usual likes of the action and concept, I really loved the witty dialogue.
  • "Our Mrs. Reynolds" is the sixth episode of science-fiction television series Firefly created by Joss Whedon. As an unexpected reward for an unpaid job, Mal finds himself married to a naive, subservient young woman named Saffron. Saffron is all too willing to play the role of housewife, which leads to argument between Wash and Zoe and lectures from Shepherd Book. But the young woman is not what she appears to be.
