Another NetBook: Lenovo IdeaPad S Series

September 25th, 2008

Here’s (yet) another new netbook that came to my attention, the Lenovo IdeaPad S Series. The specs are similar the other netbooks I’ve been checking out (1.6GHz Intel Atom, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HD, Windows XP) and the list price is $439.

The design is a bit boxier than the Acer Aspire One I was really close to purchasing, and resembles the MacBook, which is a good thing. White and dark blue are available now, while dark red, pink, and black arrive in December.

Obviously the options in the sub $500, netbook space are getting pretty dense, and the options are actually making it harder for me to pull the trigger on a purchase.

Then there’s always the small hope that Apple will announce their own “MacBook Mini” – rendering all my netbook research null and void. If Apple released their “netbook” I’d buy that within minutes. Is it October yet?

Why is it that every Windows netbook only comes with a HDD instead of a SSD? For me the coolness factor decreases dramatically because of that.

Sure, the SSD netbooks run Linux and increases the geekness factor, but my preferences on a netbook OS are pretty stratified – OS X, then XP, and only if forced to Linux. Sorry, but I wish to spend my “geek” time coding web apps and not tweaking some OS to work the way I want it to.

It could be that xp doesn't run well on the cheaper ssd models. And I
do agree regarding the os choice. If apple had a macbook mini I'd go
    with that no question.
