Windows Seinfeld Ad #2: Better, But Still Pretty Meh

September 11th, 2008

Well – here we go with “take two” of the Jerry Seinfeld Microsoft ads. This one’s marginally more amusing as it has a clearer point and Gates is fairly funny.

Seinfeld and Gates hang out at a family’s house in Somewhere, Suburbia to connect with “real people.” There’s definitely a public perception that the only folks who can afford Apple computers are artsy-fartsy intellectuals with big disposable incomes. The PC is the computer for “joe average” of which there are, naturally, a whole bunch of them out there. So mainstream America should be able to relate to the mundane family and the prospect of hosting two clueless celebrities.

There’s also a glimmer of a theme of Seinfeld and Gates visiting different environments and seeing Windows computers used by different, average people.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that Gates makes a rather amusing straight man, reminding me of another Apple weakness: Jobs isn’t likely to ever appear in an Apple commercial.

In conclusion, this one’s better, but I don’t think Apple has anything to worry about. “Meh” just about sums it up for me.

  • Weird. But I'll admit I chuckled a few times and am warming up to Bill G. The latter is probably the best aspect of this series so far. Still...it's hard to stomach how much this is costing them and what exactly it's communicating to people outside of the online technorati.
  • Long time no see Seinfeld..LOL
  • JC
I agree, this is better, but still meh. It's at least funnier than the first one. But isn't this a bit long for a commercial? Are they cutting this down for prime time, or are they buying entire commercial blocks for it?

I still wonder why Microsoft is running brand awareness ads. Seems pretty silly to me. They should at least be tying these into Vista somehow. Maybe they hope that if people think Bill Gates is a nice guy, they'll stop thinking of Microsoft as the ultimate evil empire. That could work, I guess.
  • One can only guess that as this series continues it will at some
point, tie into someone actually using a computer. I think there was a
glimmer of that with the kid playing a video game in this one.
