One Step Closer To Video Nirvana: NBC Back On iTunes

September 10th, 2008

A while back I posted on my decidedly personal version of “video nirvana.” Another step up the eightfold path occured yesterday, as part of Apple’s “Let’s Rock” announcement was NBC’s return to the iTunes store.

For me, it’s one show in particular - Battlestar Galactica, and I’ll now be able to watch the second half of Season 4, when it airs sometime in 2009, on the Apple TV.

It looks like Apple did grant different pricing terms for older shows vs. newer titles and HD, but ultimately NBC looks like the loser in this skirmish. They missed out on direct iTunes sales revenue, as the TV show content is pay per download (no rentals or ads). It’s very telling that no other studios joined NBC and pulled out content, leaving NBC looking particularly clueless. Apple has built a really cool video distribution channel which simply can’t be ignored.

As a final note, looks like Battlestar Galactica is being used as a HD content teaser - right now, the first episode of season 4, He That Believeth In Me, is available for free. I just checked it out and the battle scenes in particlar are very cool to see in HD. Namaste.
