Starring Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, Gary Oldman
Directed by Matthew Bright
Synopsis
Steven (Matthew McConaughey) is hiding something from his girlfriend Carol (Kate Beckinsale) – his parents and twin brother (Gary Oldman) are dwarfs.
The Good
- Gary Oldman plays Rolfe, McConaughey’s dwarf brother, completely unrecognizable to where I thought he was portrayed by an actual dwarf actor. I didn’t even realize it was Oldman until I began writing this review.
- A good assortment of actors including Peter Dinklage from The Station Agent who overall, act as normal as can be, making the audience comfortable with dwarfism.
The Bad
- A pointless parallel plot with Maurice (Dinklage) and his normal-sized girlfriend Lucy (Patricia Arquette).
- The movie starts out as a quirky indie romantic comedy, until Lucy becomes pregnant and Steven crumbles under the thought of fathering a dwarf child. It’s a risky place to go and the film completely fails to give such a serious subject the treatment it deserves, meandering into the unintentionally funny realm with a heavy dollop of shameful guilt.
- McConaughey fails (again).
Conclusion
Sigh. The plot fails to support the worthy subject matter. Unless you’re a diehard indie / Gary Oldman fan, skip it.
