I had scanned some documents onto my computer and although they were jpgs, iphoto wouldn't read them. The problem? iphoto doesn't recognize the file's color embedding from Lexmark printers (or possibly other devices). The simple solution is to resave in photoshop, but uncheck the box that says "Embed Color Profile". Simple solution for me. Whew. I had the same problem which I fixed very simply.
