Upgraded to Disqus 2.0.1

August 22nd, 2008

I just installed Disqus 2.0.1 on this blog – I decided to be fashionably late on this one because I had 4,000+ comments that needed to be imported into Disqus and it seemed there were some bugs with the initial 2.0 release.

Anyhow, when I first installed Disqus I didn’t import all the comments on older posts. So for several months, I was actually moderating comments in the old WordPress interface in addition to Disqus, which was getting kind of tedious. Now I can moderate all new comments from Disqus, the Disqus area that appears in the WordPress admin panel, or via email.

Importing all the old comments has changed the stats under the Disqus widget to reflect the entire history of the blog. Under “comment stuff” you can see the most popular posts are still really old ones – the Best And Worst James Bond Films for example.

The second item is up to you readers – old comments left by you may need to be “claimed” so you can bring old comments in line with your current Disqus profile. This would likely happen if you used a different email address earlier. To claim an old comment, roll over the comment’s avatar, click “unclaimed profile,” and then “claim profile” and follow the further directions. You just have to click on a link that you’ll receive in the email account you used previously.

That’s about it. I’ve really enjoyed Disqus as a service and handing over all these back-comments is an endorsement of sorts.

Ooh, I wish there were an easier way to claim old comments. Guess I'll trawl through the archives and see.

Hey wow. Since I've only ever used one email address here, I just had to find one post I commented on, and claim that one. It then claimed all posts I made at this site with the same email address.

Looks like you've got some to do, though. Check out the post that helped me find this place - don't know why, but I was Googling old MacAddict staff members, wondering what ever happened to them.
  • Yeah, you're right - I had a bunch of comments that I made using the
default blog email address which is different than my usual commenting
one. Just claimed them. And MacAddict - I totally let my subscription
lapse for their new version - MacLife. I preferred the unruly version
    from many years ago.

Ditto - man, I remember reading my first issue of MacAddict. In the letters section, a guy said "my girlfriend just bought a PC, what do I do?". Their answer was: dump her.

It was that kind of spirit that pulled me in - I really miss that. In many ways, it's no longer a community anymore.
  • Nice...I just "claimed" all my old comments too. Nice feature.
  • Heh, looks like by claiming your old comments you instantly zoomed
ahead to the top commentator spot - 181 comments :) Mike's in second
    place...

Ha!! Looks like I've got some work to do (just kidding).

I was prepared to find every old comment I ever made, and claim them one by one...am pleasantly surprised that it was much easier than that.

Edit: Also, if you're using a WordPress caching plugin, you might want to exclude the comments somehow. I came here to find Papa's comment saying "posted 0 minutes ago" (it now says "1 hour ago"), and your comments not even here.
  • Yeah I have WP-SuperCache going on which might be delaying the comments, which I find kinda odd since Disqus is a separate service. I'll have to dig into that a bit...
  • thanks
