What TV Show Should I Watch / Review Next?
As most of you are aware, Battlestar Galactica is off the air until 2009, and even then, there are only a few episodes left. I’ve just finished writing a litany of Twin Peaks posts (in the queue) so guess what — I’m jonesing for another television show to watch / review, and set up a poll in the blog sidebar (look to the right) to let you, the hapless readers, point me in the right direction.
I put six of my current choices but the poll is set up so you can add your own suggestions.
Mad Men
This show is critically acclaimed everywhere I look. Only one season has gone by so I could catch up quickly. The sixties setting has a lot of personal appeal, and I generally despise advertising which ironically might make me enjoy the show more.
Firefly
A hugely popular sci-fi show that is thankfully short, which I could also blow through before BSG starts up again.
Weeds
Critically acclaimed as well. Several seasons are on the Netflix / Roku box, making this painless to begin watching.
Classic Star Trek
I’ve watched all these episodes hundreds of times but could certainly watch them again with my own unique spin. I love the unique thespian stylings of the Shat.
Heroes
I understand this show hit the skids in season 2 but I remember tons of raves for the first season.
Arrested Development
Three or four people have told me I need to watch this comedy, as the sense of humor would be up my alley. I’m very curious to learn what is meant by that.
Anyhow, those are the shows I’m considering. If none of these choices sound good to you, feel free to nominate a different show by adding to the poll. Have fun determining my future programming.
Forget Heroes. Way too popular. Plus, I couldn’t even sit through one episode, I thought the writing was so bad. And that was during the first season that everyone else loved so much.
I highly recommend Mad Men. Very good writing. And the second season just started, so you’ll have new episodes to watch. One of those rare shows that is popular and deserves to be. As someone who was born in the seventies, it’s almost impossible to imagine that this show is an accurate portrayal of the late fifties/early sixties. The drinking, smoking, sexual harassment, racial overtones. It’s a great reminder of just how recently this country was even more unenlightened than it is now.
Even more so, though, I have to recommend Firefly. One of the best shows ever to hit television. Seriously. A guy who is into sci-fi as much as you are should have watched all fourteen episodes of that show ten times by now. And as a bonus, you can watch the movie Serenity when you’re done. But only after you’re done with the show. You’ll appreciate the movie that much more once you know all the characters.
Firefly and Weeds — I’d like to see what your thoughts would be on these two shows — even though Firefly is no longer running
My votes would be
1) Mad Men
2) Heroes
3) Firefly
I’ll put in the vote for Arrested Development. I’m not sure exactly what an episode-by-episode review of it would look like (I suspect it would be very peculiar), but I’d love to see you give it a go.
I added The Office, meaning the US version (I haven’t seen the UK version, so I can’t recommend it).
I was going to suggest Burn Notice instead, but I love that show so much that I was afraid to hold it up to scrutiny. I know it’s got shortcomings, but if you don’t analyze it, it’s a lot of fun. I’d highly recommend Burn Notice, though.
The Office is more traditional of a show, sort of. The first season sucks, but you’ve got to watch it to understand who’s who. From there, the second season is excellent and it only gets better from there. Luckily, the first season is only about 6 episodes, I think.
No no no no no. There’s no choice here. It’s Arrested Development. The absolute greatest show no one ever watched (until it was over). Plus I’m pretty sure I saw every episode online for free (but legally) somewhere.…
I’d also go for Arrested Development. It’s 2 1/3 seasons long. So it’s not overwhelming (and I still think you would enjoy it immensely — the show just gets better and better as you get further into it). Firefly is also a good series to hit up and thankfully it’s pretty short.
Per the comment from Ross — Hulu.com had a LOT of the Arrested Development series online for free. Dunno if they still do.
I’d skip Heroes. I’m a fan of the show, but really, it’s not worth reviewing (it’s lightweight popcorn in my opinion). Lost is a much worthier “serious” serial to review, but that would be a daunting task at this point.
Definitely should be Arrested Development.
Hmmm, well, you folks are making this challenging. Seems like Weeds, Heroes, and Classic star trek are out, but Mad Men, Firefly, and Arrested Development are in the running. The relative shortness of all three, and the fact that Firefly and Arrested Development are already off the air, have me considering tackling all three…
I did really enjoy the UK version of the office, so much so that I shied
away from the American version. I do understand the American one has come
into its own, but at this point the series has had so many seasons I’d have
a lot of catching up to do. I’ll likely watch it eventually, but I’m not
sure about giving it the blog treatment just yet.
Ah! In that case, give Burn Notice a try. It just started the second season, and it’s got Bruce Campbell. It’s a smart action-type show, with equal parts of explosions and critical thinking.
I didn’t care for the US Office season 4 as much as season 2 and 3, fwiw. I think the show may have passed or be at the “jump the shark” stage. We’ll see once season 5 begins.
I actually like season 1 of the US office. Though the first episode is a real stinker (it’s a clone of the UK series’ first episode).
Dexter.
you may be annoyed by the portrayal of the korean boy in Arrested Development… nobody is likable in Weeds and i can’t speak to the rest of the list. i’m w/ you on the original The Office. have you seen Extras? The Wire is awesome…
If you are looking for shows to fill the time till BSG, I would also add the Dr. Who, the 9th and 10th doctors. Torchwood, and the first season of farscape. Also I would recommend Star Trek TNG or even Voyager.
you’ll have new episodes to watch. One of those rare shows that is popular and deserves to be. As someone who was born in the seventies,
