Will You Become A Cyborg?
Becoming a “cyborg” is one of those sci-fi fantasies that seems inevitable. At some point, technology will be small enough and some interface between electronics and our nervous system will be developed to where we could “enhance” our physical bodies with electronics.
This begins with wearable computing, which is nearly here today. Many of us carry a cellphone, iPod, or iPhone. Many people have those Bluetooth earpieces that hang over one ear, connected to a cell phone. The next steps might be a controller that’s designed to be worn like a glove, a pair of eyeglasses that house a small monitor, or even contact lenses.
I think people are addicted enough to portable electronics to where actually implanting smaller versions into their bodies won’t be much of a leap for many.
The next step might be an iPod 2020 that plays all the music ever recorded directly to your auditory nerve. Or a sci-fi “neural implant” that reads your thoughts and acts as an input device for a traditional computer, or solid state RAM implanted in your brain plus a camera for your optic nerve that would record things you see with your own eyes.
Anyhow, I’m drawing a line in the virtual silicon sand right now: I’m not having any of this cyborg stuff.
The biggest reason is a total abhorrence to any body modifications. I have no tattoos or piercings. Therefore, having a chip stuck under my skin is not something I want to do unless it’s absolutely necessary. I also value the ability to leave technology completely behind when on vacation.
Still, I’ll leave a way out for something health-related. Today, I could probably stomach a pacemaker that prolonged my life, so I might cave in to some kind of immuno-defense chip that ensures you’d never get sick as long as you live, or nano-bots that cleaned my bloodstream. But the whole concept still grosses me out.
What about you? Does becoming a Borg excite you at the thought of being assimilated? Or will you be one of the reluctant converts like me, griping about the kids and their neural implants?
