3G iPhone Madness: Lines, Apple TV Update, App Store
Last night, my wife suggested we get one at 8AM but I’m now considering stopping by an Apple Store after work, and reserving Saturday as a backup plan.
- Overnight, MG Siegler waited in line at the Market Street store. He’s posted some videos, and estimates there are about 100 folks in line. Robert Scoble arrived this morning, and does a walkthrough of the disturbingly long line with to see folks with lawn chairs and camp chairs. It goes around the block.
- Yesterday, the MacFixit folks flew all the way to New Zealand to be among the first to get an iPhone based on the date line. Then they took one of them apart. Drool-worthy photos.
- Also yesterday, a co-worker (you know who you are) downloaded the iPhone 2.0 software early along with some apps. I fiddled with it for a bit; the App Store on the iPhone proper is really slick, Monkey Ball turns the iPhone into a PSP, and the wealth of apps make “jailbreaking” a phone hugely less appealing. At present, the App Store is officially open — those sans-iphone can access it through iTunes.
- Apple TV received an update to 2.1. One new thing I noticed was support for using your iPhone as a remote, but there is now MobileMe access (sweet!). I also ran into a glitch trying to rent a movie because of some service agreement that kept popping up. The workaround is to use a Mac with iTunes 7.7 and the same iTunes account, buy / rent something in the iTunes Store in order to “click through” that agreement on said Mac, and the Apple TV will then function normally.
