Movie Notes: Ronin

June 4th, 2008

Ronin

starstarstar = 3 stars

Starring Robert De Niro, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone
Directed by John Frankenheimer

Synopsis

Dierdre (Natascha McElhone) hires Sam (Robert De Niro) and other independent criminals to intercept a suitcase containing important materials en route to the Russians.

The Good

  • A few thrilling chase sequences, in particular a lengthy car chase through several tunnels.
  • De Niro is solid as always as a hardened no-nonsense criminal. There’s one intense scene where he directs others to perform an operation on him to remove bullets.

The Bad

  • The plot is pretty convoluted and I’ll admit to getting completely confused and lost a lot of interest when ice skating became involved.

Conclusion

It’s got some great action scenes and a grounded, central performance from De Niro. That’s about it. A fine rental.

  • Ronin has one of the best car chase scenes ever! And I just like the way the snappy dialog flows between the characters. I love that line, "Did you ever kill anybody? I hurt somone's feelings once."

I think of Ronin as the smart man's spy movie - like what Mission Impossible should've been instead of becoming a mess of CGI & stunts fluff and plot twists invented for the sole purpose of confusing the audience rather than propelling the story.

Just smart in every way. The lighting, coloring, and texture really reinforce the European feel.

And it has Jean Reno, who is almost always uber cool!
  • Gee, I guess I should have paid more attention. :)
  • Sean Bean seems slightly typecast to characters with certain personality defects, no? :P
  • Ed Woj
The movie is "super"!!! Cast ,plot, action are all suspensful and fast moving.
What is the name of the song and the composer of the music while katarina Witt is skating?
