Movie Notes: A Guy Thing
May 2nd, 2008

= 1 star
Starring Jason Lee, Julia Stiles, Selma Blair
Directed by Chris Koch
Synopsis
Paul (Jason Lee) is about to marry Karen (Selma Blair) but wakes up in bed next to Becky (Julia Stiles) – Karen’s cousin. Paul begins to reconsider his relationship with Karen.
The Good
- Much sympathy for Julia Stiles, Jason Lee, and Selma Blair, who are decent elsewhere. They provide a base level of entertainment amid the cinematic schlock.
The Bad
- Predictable, like a low-rent Meet The Parents or There’s Something About Mary. You know who will end up with whom; it’s just a matter of how many painful situations they musy endure to get there. Here, we have shopping for crab medicine, pot at a rehearsal dinner, and soiled panties in a toilet.
- Extremely lazy direction, with no buildup or pay off to the limp jokes.
- The sort of flick where in the absence of decent material, characters fall down for laughs. That doesn’t work either.
Conclusion
Don’t waste your time with A Guy Thing. Unfortunately, the whole 99 cent rental concept is less of a deal when it includes intolerable flicks like this.
