Battlestar Galactica: Scar
Synopsis
A particular raider nicknamed “Scar” has killed several pilots. Starbuck and Kat, having developed a rivalry, bet on who will shoot down Scar first. Meanwhile, Starbuck’s drinking has increased and she sorely misses Anders.
Sharon tells Starbuck that raiders reincarnate, but with the resurrection ship destroyed, it has changed the Cylon’s tactics.
Helo tells Starbuck to ignore Kat. He asks her about Anders, which Starbuck ignores. The newer pilots are scared of Scar, and Kat blames Starbuck for a new pilot’s death.
Starbuck and Lee reminisce over drinks. Starbuck comes onto Lee but he is taken aback by her aggressive behavior.
The next day, Kat again criticizes Starbuck during a briefing. Starbuck pulls her aside. Kat calls her a drunk, and Starbuck mentions Kat’s “stim” addiction. Kat punches her. Unaware that the two are fighting, Lee puts them out on the next patrol together.
Starbuck and Scar fly toward each other. Starbuck recalls Anders as she hurtles toward a likely death. But at the last moment she breaks off, leading Scar toward Kat, who zooms in and destroys Scar.
Kat gets all the credit for killing Scar. Starbuck later tells Helo that she could have killed the raider, but would have died in the process. Helo says it’s better that she lived and maybe she should start living for Anders instead of wanting to die because they aren’t together.
Thoughts
I liked seeing the start of Starbuck’s self-destructive slide. As Lee dealt with his near-death experience in the previous episode Black Market, here Starbuck experiences similar loss and aimlessness.
Unfortunately, the character Kat has always bugged me - I think because of her know-it-all, completely un-humble attitude, brashly on display. I didn’t like Season 3’s The Passage much, either, for exactly the same reason.
Next Episode: Sacrifice
