Season 4, Episode 1

Synopsis

Starbuck returns to the Galactica via “retro” viper after her disappearance several months ago. The Galactica crew, including Commander Adama, are skeptical of her claim that she visited Earth – and even wonder if she’s a Cylon.

Meanwhile, the four “Final Five” Cylons (Tigh, Chief, Anders, and Tory) haphazardly deal with their Cylon nature – throughout the episode they are nervous and on edge.

Baltar is taken in by a religious cult that worships him, and comes within an inch of losing his life.

Thoughts

I really frakking enjoyed this episode. My desire to see space battles was satisfied during the first few minutes. And with Tigh shooting Adama and Baltar nearly eating it, I thought we were close to seeing some main characters bumped off, too. I liked the confident return to the “get to earth” story arc.

The opening credits showing the seven existing Cylons and the four just revealed form another story arc that will likely prove entertaining for this final season.

I even think I’ll enjoy Baltar’s new place, especially since with the addition of lovely women – how can he resist?

The one complaint I have is Tory – I don’t know much about that character and she seemed the least disturbed to be a Cylon. I worry that the actress isn’t up to the task. Contrast this with Tigh’s perpetually confused look this entire episode – classic.

But overall, I noticed an unsettling feeling that nothing is as it seems anymore. Who knows what the four Cylons will be up to, and what’s up with Starbuck. Before, we only wondered about Athena and Baltar, now many of the main characters’ true intentions are in doubt.

The episode was too short; I can hardly wait until next week.

I agree that Tory does not appear to be a strong enough character to be a cylon. Now it would be cool if it turned out that Billy (Roslin's previous aide) was one of the final five. I would like to think that would have been the case if Paul Campbell had not left the show.
  • So since Billy isn't on the show anymore, who do you think the final fifth Cylon might be?
  • John McCain's, err I mean Colonel Tigh's acting was insanely good this episode. I just want to know how he could have been a Cylon for so long, it means their ability to look human goes further back than we thought.

Overall a great episode that didn't waste any time getting right back into it. I was glad to see the fire fight off the bat too so I could then focus on the story line after getting my action fix.
  • Colonel Tigh's definitely become one of the best parts of the show - I think he came into his own last season. I agree that this episode was really great, I almost peed my pants during the opening and was disappointed and relieved at the same time moments later.

As for Tory, I agree she's been a strange addition to the cast - sometimes a strong player, but generally coasting along. I'll be curious to see how she steps it up.
  • Yeah, Tigh is cool - starting with his inadvertent command at the start of Season 2 (when Commander Adama was shot), he became more interesting to me, and then his mysterious freedom fighter leader turn on New Caprica. I am already enjoying "confused, I'm a Cylon" Tigh!
