Added Disqus To Webomatica
March 27th, 2008
After some consideration I decided to throw caution to the wind install Disqus on this blog. It’s a comment management service spread across blogs.
Several features that should be pretty cool for readers:
- Comments are threaded so you can reply to specific comments.
- Comments are rateable – you can vote up them up or down.
- There is now a Webomatica forum of sorts (webomatica.disqus.com) where you can see all this blog’s posts in one place and have your way with them, comment-wise.
- If you create a Disqus login you can create an avatar, and be able to comment on the other 4,000 or so blogs that use Disqus, such as Mathew Ingram, WinExtra, Scripting News, or Fake Steve Jobs.
For more info, check out their tour.
What’s in it for me:
- This should mean less time haggling with spam comments.
- I can remove several comment-related WordPress plugins – namely the recent comments, top comments, and most commented ones – and replace them with Disqus-stuff.
- Moderation and replies to your comments should be easier.
- Most importantly, less wrangling with spomments means more time to write blog posts.
Big thanks to Steven Hodson and Mike for convincing me to give this service a shot. Feel free to test it out in the comments below.
First comment – just testing this out myself to make sure it's working – also the sidebar widgets.
Sweet, it works.
I can't rate my own comment. Well, that's fair…
glad to see you took the plunge
Apparently I can rate your comments – so that works, too…
Yeah, thanks again. Now that I'm checking out the moderation side at Disqus (typing in it now), I'm realizing how slick this is. This is gonna save me some time!
Nice! Actually another benefit I just realized, is the comments will show up faster since they aren't cached with WP-Cache like the post content. Sidebar will hopefully update faster too.
so far, so good! thx for the comment
Pretty neat. I've been increasingly gun-shy about committing to new services but this one looks interesting. I like their interface (over at disqus.com).
This looks like a really nice, well-thought out service.
A pity about the domain/brand name though.
Dude – you gotta stay on top of the curve to keep up with the competition!
Yeah the name is a little odd. I first thought of the metal frisbee type discus. I guess it's supposed to be some variation on “discuss” but who knows.
I like it! Seems speedy.
Am wondering if the commenting form should be at the bottom, not the top of the comments – right now, it encourages you to reply without first checking to see if other people have said the same thing. In that sense, it's less of a conversation.
Also, are the comments in the reverse order? Hmm.
Otherwise though, lots of benefits indeed! I'm definitely going to recommend this when I help people set up their own blogs, this is nice.
I kinda like the comment form at top, but perhaps there is a setting to flip that. I think there's a setting to change the sort order – right now it might be sorted by top rated comments.
Gee, wouldn't you know – there's a setting to put the new comment box on the bottom, and also to sort by oldest or newest. I adjusted both. I think I like the newest comments on the bottom, so let's see how this feels.
Likin' the Disqus so far, that's for sure.
Ah, that makes sense.
I like the comments being a conversation – Digg's commenting system is nice. Comments are sorted by date, and lower-rated comments are hidden from view – but clickable.
Just my two cents.
Test comment to test the sorting.
Cool! Thanks, Jason!!
wow, you are always in the avant garde Jason…not sure what this Disqis is about..but I'm guessing if you're using it, it's worth checking out
i like it when I get to be the first to use my screen name so I don't have to come up with some bad alternate
Yeah, thanks for testing this out! It's “just” a commenting system for blogs, and adds a lot of functionality to the Webomatica blog with little effort on my part. The voting up down thing is cool I think.
