Conclusion

While The Fly began well and has some fine acting, I felt it devolved (no pun intended) into senseless gore in its final scenes. Was it really necessary to show a man’s arm and leg dissolved by fly vomit? Possibly. But it’s a horror flick — what was I expecting?

As for David Cronenberg — I’m not as into his fascination for throbbing organs and schlock horror. But his subject matter of oddball nerdy types is certainly appealing.

I learned there’s a Fly II. I think I’ll skip that one.

I’ve seen this a couple of times but man, I really can’t get past the gross-out factor of the metamorphosis. It’s tough to watch Brundle’s transformation.

I noticed on Wikipedia that Howard Shore (of Lord of the Ring fame) composed the score. Also interesting are the late 1950s movie precursors (it appears there was a trilogy) starring Vincent Price:

The Fly 2? I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy. I can’t imagine that’s even remotely watchable.l

The Fly is my favorite movie…Altough it is fiction, but the story is touching.
