iPhone 3G Rumors
Seems there are some iPhone 3G rumors floating around:
- Wired’s Gadget Lab reports iPhone sold out in New York stores, leading some to speculate that the new iPhone is “imminent.”
- Kevin Rose Rumor #1: Video chat. The iPhone will have two cameras, on front and the back. Will have a mobile version of iChat.
- Kevin Rose Rumor #2: Will ship in June with GPS.
It’s worth remembering Rose’s original iPhone predictions were pretty off the mark. He claimed the phone would have a slide away keyboard and two removable batteries, one for the phone and the other for the iPod.
No offense to Rose, but when it comes to Apple rumors you pretty much have to play it safe and keep that fan boy imagination in check. Imagine what’s possible and then scale it back about 50%. Apple likes to get things really, really right, and features are introduced piecemeal to get folks to upgrade multiple times over the course of several years.
All I’ll commit to is it’s coming out sometime this year. And Apple expects to sell a crap load of them. If the rumors are true, of course.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

I am thinking of buying iphone myself, as some of my friend have it and I am loving it.
If the rumors are true, i am gone buy IPhone 3G
True or not, I’m enjoying the speculation. I’ve never been excited about a phone before until now. I was late to the cellphone game and have typically owned the cheapest, least cool phone once I did join the cellular masses. Now that I’ve pretty much abandoned my land-line and am “fully cellular”, the potential move to a “smart device” is looking really appealing. I’ve been holding off for the 3G upgrade though. Once Apple gets this out there, I’ll dive in headfirst (and Steve will have found yet another way for me to open my wallet for them).
Personally, I’ll be happy with an announcement in the summer.
FWIW, my wife who has been a longtime PDA user (all Palm devices) is also looking very closely at the iPhone. The big ticket item for her will be a localized version of Epocrates (the drug database used by doctors). Epocrates already - wisely - makes the db available via the internet, but many hospitals have spotty wifi/cellular connectivity. Fortunately, Steve Jobs recognizes that he can deal another blow to faltering Palm and announced that Apple is working directly with Epocrates to bring this app to the iPhone. Once that happens, I can only imagine that a lot of medical professionals (who are heavy PDA/smart device users) will be migrating to Apple.
If the 3G iPhone has 32 GB of storage, I plan to buy one too. That way, I can leave my iPod behind.
