Synopsis

A raptor with Baltar, Chief, Callie, Seelix, and others aboard has crashed on Kobol. Baltar narrowly escapes and collapses into tall grass. He dreams that Head Six leads him into a grand, ornate opera house. She says he must be a guardian and protector of the next generation of gods, and this new member will be joining them soon. She leads him to a baby in a cradle.

On Caprica, Athena tells Helo that a ruined museum holds the Arrow of Apollo which points to earth, and that she’s pregnant with their child. Starbuck, in the raider, evades the Cylon fleet surrounding Caprica using the transponder. She lands outside the same museum Athena and Helo are near. Inside, Starbuck finds the arrow of Apollo but is attacked by a Cylon Six model. Starbuck fights off the Cylon. She is shocked to find Helo still alive, and doubly so to see Athena, as Boomer is still on Galactica. Starbuck realizes Athena is a Cylon, and is then truly disturbed to learn of Athena’s pregnancy.

Angry about Starbuck’s mission, Adama asks for Roslin’s resignation. She counters that this amounts to a military coo. Adama orders a strike team to board Colonial One.

With Starbuck AWOL, Adama asks Boomer to fire a nuke at the Cylon basestar, using a transponder to get the raptor through Cylon defenses.

As Roslin prepares her staff, three raptors with armed soldiers approach and board Colonial One. Tigh and Lee place Roslin under arrest. At the last moment, Lee pulls a gun on Tigh. Roslin surrenders, ending the standoff.

Boomer and another crew member approach the basestar. They try to fire the nuke but its firing mechanism is jammed. Sharon decides to land the raptor inside the basestar and detonate the nuke from within. They fly through a long tunnel to a landing area. Boomer exits Raptor to set the nuke up manually. A cadre of Number 8 models that look exactly like her approach. Boomer (finally) realizes she is a cylon. Frightened, Boomer boards the raptor and flies away. The nuke explodes, destroying the basestar.

Back on Galactica, Adama congratulates Boomer and the other crewmember on a mission well done. Boomer pulls out a gun and shoots Adama in the chest.

Thoughts

Awesome season finale. Several plot threads are tying up while others collapse, setting the stage for season two.

It looks like Helo and Athena will finally escape Caprica with Starbuck’s help. Helo can’t kill Athena because she’s pregnant with his child, which is daring – the character will surely to return to Galactica and have to deal with angry humans and her clone, Boomer.

A Cylon / human hybrid baby was hinted at in 33, when Six shares with Baltar a desire to have a child. Now that Sharon is pregnant, this will definitely come true. This seems to be part of the Cylon plan to bring Athena and Helo together to fall in love.

This season finale is a real cliff hanger. Adama has been mortally wounded, Sharon is pregnant, characters are split between Caprica and Kobol, Roslin and Lee are at odds with the military, Adama is pissed at Lee, and Boomer is revealed as a Cylon to the fleet at large. As we see in the season two finale and season three finale, leaving everything a mess is par for the course as far as Battlestar Galactica is concerned.
