I’ve Been Outed

March 20th, 2008

Over the past few weeks I’ve noticed an increasing amount of references to this blog by my real name - Jason Kaneshiro. Most likely this is due to my unintentional use of my real name at FriendFeed and to a lesser degree, the other blog I’m writing for, the Blog Herald.

I’m generally okay with my real name being out there, although I started blogging as “Webomatica” since that was the name of this website, and well… I didn’t really know how far this blogging thing would go and to what extent using my real name would be a detriment or a positive in terms of privacy.

But now that my name is out there, it’s become a moot point. I can’t really pull it back. So I’m taking ownership of my real name and moving ahead. I changed the author field on this blog from “Webomatica” to “Jason Kaneshiro” and also purchased the domain name jasonkaneshiro.com which points to this here site. I don’t think I’ll use that domain name at all except as a pointer, but it’s my way of solidifying the name for whatever the future may bring.

Another reason to “take ownership” is there is another “Jason Kaneshiro” whom I have never met and is not me, who writes sports articles for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. Believe it or not, “Kaneshiro” is a common name in Hawaii where I grew up. So a Google search presently mixes us up and in addition, there are some online profiles that are totally messed up. I need to associate my name with this site so it isn’t more confusing than it already is.

Here are some handy tips for future reference:

Not Me
: Spoke Profile
Not Me: Actor in IMDB
Not Me: Personal Homepage

Anyhow, nice to meet you if you didn’t already know my name.

Take heart Jase, at least your middle name remains TOP SECRET! :-)

My name is Dave Dombrowski. What’s odd is that most poeple don’t realize how common my name is:

    (1) I was one of three DaveDs living in my town of 200,000 in Pennsylvania. None of us have ever met, and AFAIK none of us are related whatsoever. I speak in the past tense because there are only two of us left in town - the one with bad credit doesn’t live in the area anymore!

    (2) I grew up as a Cleveland sports fan listening to (then) WWWE and nowadays WTAM 1100 AM, the broadcast home of the Indians, Cavaliers, and Browns. I don’t know if he’s still the broadcast engineer for the radio sportcasts, but guess who it was? You got it.

    (3) But why I just had to post is this - my namesake went from being the GM of the Montreal Expos (contender when he was there) to the Florida Marlins (leading them to the World Series over Cleveland in 1997 and pretty much rebuilt the 2003 champs too) to nowadays the Detroit Tigers (AL champs in 2006).

I’m still amazed at how people I work with every day can’t believe how common my name is.

heh, those are good anecdotes. I don’t know any Dave Dombrowskis but surely there are several with a nation this large. I imagine its a little like that oddity of shared birthdays when you have enough people in the same room. There seems to be a pretty small subset of first names (how many Daves or Gregs do you know) and from there, the last names are less common but not as unusual as we think.

I wonder how many Dave Smiths there are… the mind reels.

Good now I can call you Jason instead of webo :)

Cool, Jason! In replying to you, I wasn’t sure what I should call you - so I checked your About page, which listed your first and last name (so it’s not a secret). :)

I’m glad you’re not unhappy about being outed. I had the same thing happen once before, and I ended up killing the blog to remove the associations. It sucked, but it was a little more personal in nature and definitely not something I’d want every current or prospective employer to be digging through.
