Webomatica Update: February 2008

March 2nd, 2008

End of the month, another quick blog update. Traffic slowed down a tad, due to a shorter month, no MacWorld, and the host server going down. Still ended with about 40K uniques.

I’m currently working on adding FriendFeed to the sidebar in lieu of Google Reader. I was previously adding Google Reader Shared Links and Twitter, but have recently decided just embedding one feed that pulls in all the other social stuff I do makes much more sense. Mike gave me a good tip of SimplePie which I hope to get working, as soon as I can figure out why it keeps complaining about my WordPress cache. Ah, technology.

  • How are you tracking "uniques"? What counts as a unique and what software are you using? Depending on which software I use, the total number can vary widely, with SiteMeter and MyBlogLog showing the lowest #'s, and Summary or Analog having the highest #'s.
  • I've been using server logs - namely AWstats that comes with my hosting package. I'm not sure what that package considers "unique" but it's the lowest metric I'm currently watching. I think it's based on IP address.
  • Jase have you considered Google Analytics? It's pretty nice. But if you're happy with what you've got then there's no need.

If you really want to amuse yourself you could "get quantified" http://www.quantcast.com/ and add yourself to the slate of sites that are being official tracked by quantcast (they also provide rankings for sites that aren't part of their reporting network via a panel like nielsen or alexa). We did this for fanpop so that we could provide 3rd parties with a publicly available set of traffic data. It's always amusing to look at the rank list and see your site ranked somewhere between "bigboobsalert.com" and "fratpartysluts.com" (it's also humbling to see how high the % of porn sites that have penetrated the top 5000 are -- sorry for the word choice).
  • Yeah I have Google Analytics installed and while I do check it every so often, it's nearly overkill for my once a month peeks into the traffic. I do notice some pretty large discrepancies (as Louis Gray points out) between the server info, Google Analytics, MyBlogLog, and some of the other folks like Alexa or Compete to where I might just uninstall the Google stuff to increase page loading time. I figure the server logs must be the most accurate since it's what is serving up the pages.
  • 40k is a HUGE traffic, at least for me
may I recommend bigger rss button, it creates miracles, although 250+ is awesome too
  • I got a mention in the post. I feel special. hehe. :P

Actually my blog went down on 12th feb and i left the blogosphere all together but am back now.

And nice stats btw. 40k unique is a decent enough traffic but I guess you had a couple of problems this month as well so considering that, you did really well. Congrats. Good luck for this month as well!

    Wow, hehe...thank you, sir.

Also, thanks for writing the FriendFeed articles...I would have never heard of them if it weren't for you. :)
