Tim Finn is Neil Finn’s brother, and while he’s made some music I really love, I can’t shake the feeling that his best work was in Split Enz, a brief stint with Crowded House, and the other partnership with Neil, The Finn Brothers. Say It Is So is decidedly average and sadly jumbled. Despite solid production and a fun energy, lackluster songwriting and uninspired lyrics drag things down.

There are two, possibly three tracks I’d keep, the best being Twinkle, a small pop gem, with a relaxed groove, and a shiny guest vocal by country artist Julie Miller. Also decent are album opener Underwater Mountain and the folksy The Death Of A Popular Song.

Average is the meandering Need To Be Right, which sounds a little like XTC’s Wounded Horse if sung by Elvis Costello. The other songs are even less interesting. Tim has much better, similar stuff on Tim Finn (1989) and Everyone I Know Is Here. So I say Say It Is So is simply so-so.
