Apple Cuts iPod Shuffle Price: New iPod Soon?

February 19th, 2008

AppleApple cut the price of the iPod Shuffle line significantly today, taking the 1GB model to $49 and the 2GB model to $69. That’s significant, and a good move in the wake of a possible recession where consumers snap their wallets shut. $49 is the price of a tank of gas.

I have a soft spot for the iPod Shuffle because it was my “gateway drug” into the iPod line. After that, I worked my way up from a Shuffle to a Nano and my present iPod Video. I’m currently dreaming of an iPhone. The Shuffle gets people used to using iTunes to manage music and push to the iPod, and soon they’re dreaming of more storage space and a screen to choose what song to hear.

And now that Apple has moved the Shuffle lower on the price pole, I’m wondering if prices will be dropped for the Nano and the iPod Touch. A recent rumor suggested a price drop of $100 for the iPod Touch and iPhone.

Then there is the rumored-rumor of an Apple special event featuring Linkin Park - meaning a music related announcement. I suppose the dreamed-of announcement would be an iPod Nano with multitouch capabilities.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

I would imagine that’s next on the docket. Apple’s likely working on getting the multitouch trackpad in there :)
